NEA Research Part 7 - Producers/Directors Research

Five steps in your Blogging Journey

Task 1 - Create a new post and title it "NEA Part 7 - Producers/Directors Research"

Task 2 - Write a short introduction explaining what you're going to be researching.  Make sure you use media terminology at all times.

E.g.
"In this post I will be researching a range of media practitioners linked to my chosen brief, paying particular attention to the style and use of conventions in the type of media products they produce.  I will also be making reference to some of their existing products, this will give me a ideas on how I can gain inspiration from their techniques and for my own productions of both the main task and the website. I think by understanding the practitioners linked to my chosen brief, it will enable me to produce a media text that follows and reflects their style more effectively."

Task 3 - THE MAIN TASK.


Research 3 different Media Producers/Directors/Photographers (depending on your chosen media brief) and look at some of the products they have made. 
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:
·       What similarities and differences can you see? 
·       What elements of media language are you noticing? 
·       Do they have a particular style? 
·       Do they only work on particular genres of media?

Task 4 - LEARNING COMMENT:
SUMMARISE – what have you learnt from this research – THINK - do you need to pick one style and stick to it?

Recommended software
Create TOP TRUMP cards for these creators.  On each card have all the details that you have found out about them.  
Include TERMINOLOGY when discussing the media language (camera angles, mise en scene, editing).

EXAMPLE OF MEDIA PRODUCERS/DIRECTORS
Music Videos: Spike Jonze, Hiro Murai, Hannah Lux Davis, Michel Gondry.
Radio Producers: Armando Iannucci, Godfrey Baseley, Sally Philips, MOST SUCCESSFUL COMEDY RADIO PROGRAMMES IN THE UK
For TV Dramas, you may want to research existing TV Dramas in ITV that resemble your idea and find out who their directors/producers are. Do these programmes have similarities in terms of style? Similarities in terms of use of media language?

Documentary Filmmakers: Morgan Spurlock, Michael Moore, Werner Herzog, Frederick Wiseman.
Photographers:

"In this post I will be researching the media institution linked to my chosen brief, paying particular attention to the type of company they are and the type of media products they produce.  I will also be looking into how the company ethos is reflected in their products, this will give me a ideas on how I can incorporate this into my own production of both the main task and the website. I think by understanding the institution linked to my chosen brief, it will enable me to produce a media text that follows and reflects their style, ideologies and ethos more effectively."

Task 3 - THE MAIN TASK.

Answer the questions below that link to the companies in your chosen brief.

What is the name of the company you should be making your product for?

What type of media products do they produce? (print, audio visual, audio, online).

What type of company is it? (independent? Does it have a parent company? Is it a subsidiary company? Is it an international company? Is it a cross media company? Is it a commercial company or a public service? Is it part of a conglomerate? Give examples of what other brands of labels they operate with.

How does your chosen company make money? How are they funded? Give examples of facts and figures about the earnings and investments of your chosen company. E.g. How much is the TV Licence? How much goes towards Radio production? How much does the BBC make per year? How much does it cost to advertise in ITV2? How much does it cost to advertise in a magazine made by Hearst? How much revenue does Sony Music make? What's Sony Music's yearly target?

What is the ethos/mission statement/values/vision of the company? How does this reflect on the company’s products? Give examples of their products and their website.
